There are so many new books that speak to deconstrucing Mike Johnson’s belief system. Two dropped today and one last week.
Now, Dr. Eric Sprankle’s book on ringing the devil’s doorbell was NOT written for deconstructing individuals, but my Zeus, it will hit you like a bag of widow’s mites.
I was first introduced to him through his hilarious Threads posts. Here is what he and his wife posted today to introduce his book into the world.
This is NOT a dirty book with pictures (sorry), this is a wryly told factual book that will quickly override the shame you’ve held for decades. SPOILER ALERT: fetuses masturbate. We really need to get that message to the pro-lifers and watch them clutch their pearls.
We have the book in our Book Rec section. We have it linked for sale on both Amazon and independently-owned Bookshop.org.
Here is Karen’s interview. Please review.
The other book that dropped today, is NPR journalist Sarah McCammon’s book, The Exvangelicals. I have it on my bedside and can’t wait to dig in.
Lastly, we have Anna Gazmarian’s book, Devout. Anna delves into the cross over of religiosity and mental health.
From her publicist: Devout: A Memoir of Doubt is one of Book Riot’s Top 10 Nonfiction Books to Read in March 2024! Out today from Simon & Schuster, Anna Gazmarian’s searing search for belonging while battling treatment-resistant bipolar disorder has earned praise from Publishers Weekly as a story that “deserves a wide readership.” A “whispered challenge to the evangelical church,” says Kirkus Reviews, Devout “extends a hand not only to religious people living with mental illness, but also their friends, families, and faith leaders” by “resisting easy finger-pointing and making a strong case for treatment and acceptance” (PW starred review).
Karen will be speaking to her in the future. She has remained a Christian, and I think her perspective will be interesting.
Besides buying these books so we can tell the publishing industry: We want more of these books! Buy them! Publish them! Sell them! (I can’t state how important this is), we also need to go in there and review them to counteract the trolls.
So, there are our marching orders. We might not be as organized as the church that will run to pick the books apart, but we can review and support with our dollars.
Thanks, y’all.
Hope you have a good week.
Karen and Bonnie
